Smart people at Xerox create reusable paper - will inkjet cartridges still have a place!

The smart people at Xerox have unveiled reusable printer paper, this is paper that keeps the print visible for around a day, and then dissapears. The next day you can use the paper again. A full article can be found on the scotsman website

Having observed office workers who typically print items, use them once then recycle or bin them, this is a great way to help the environment. In the future we can imagine 2 settings or perhaps 2 printers. One for the reusable ink and one for permanent printing using an inkjet printer. Just make sure you get them the right way around - otherwise you will print evaporating contracts and review results, and permanent rubbish.

We heard a technical specialist discussing this topic on BBC Radio 2 today with Chris Evans. The technology was described as being a bit like polaroid glasses that change colour depending on the brightness of the light. The paper has a special compound added to it which will change colour and show something that looks like print - but it will fade over a period of time, ready to be reused.

For permanent printing a different technology such as inkjet cartridges will always be needed. But for temporary printing this invention from Xerox represents a great step forward.
